Why We Created the Ride in Balance: Will-oh! Rider Transformation Journey

For generations, horse people have invested in lessons, clinics, training rides, and even sending horses away for training.

But here's a question we don't ask often enough:

What if the biggest opportunity for improvement isn't your horse?

What if it's you?

That question is what inspired the creation of the Ride in Balance: Will-oh! Rider Transformation Journey, a new small-group program at Willow & Withers designed to help riders build awareness, confidence, balance, and feel—both on and off the horse.

Riding Is a Journey, Not a Lesson

Many riders arrive at a lesson with the best intentions.

They learn something important.
They have a breakthrough moment.
They leave inspired.

Then life happens.

A busy work week.
Poor weather.
A horse that isn't feeling quite right.
A lesson that felt great in the moment but becomes harder to recreate a week later.

Real change rarely happens in a single lesson.

It happens through awareness, practice, reflection, and repetition.

That's why we designed this program differently.

A Program Focused on the Rider

The Ride in Balance journey isn't about fixing horses.

It's about helping riders better understand themselves.

Over three months, participants work through a structured process that combines coaching sessions on Will-oh!, our Racewood Dressage Simulator, with dedicated practice sessions that allow riders to apply and reinforce what they've learned.

The simulator provides something that is difficult to achieve on a live horse: consistency.

Will-oh! never has an off day.

She never gets tired.

She never rushes through an exercise.

Instead, riders can focus entirely on themselves—their balance, posture, timing, position, and effectiveness.

Why the Simulator Matters

Will-oh! isn't simply a mechanical horse.

She is a sophisticated training tool that measures rider inputs and provides real-time feedback on balance, rein contact, leg position, and overall effectiveness.

That feedback allows riders to answer questions they may have struggled with for years:

  • Am I sitting evenly?
  • Am I collapsing on one side?
  • Are my aids clear and consistent?
  • Why does one direction feel easier than the other?
  • What does correct feel like?

The result is greater self-awareness and faster learning.

Learning Happens Between Sessions

One of the biggest challenges riders face is transferring learning from a lesson into everyday riding.

That's why the program includes dedicated training rides.

Participants don't just receive coaching.

They practice.

They experiment.

They reflect.

They return with questions.

And then they build on that learning in the next session.

Just as horses improve through consistent schooling, riders improve through consistent practice.

Learn Alongside Other Riders

Another unique aspect of the program is the cohort model.

Participants move through the journey together.

That means celebrating wins together.

Sharing challenges.

Learning from each other's experiences.

And staying accountable to the goals they set at the beginning of the program.

Some of the most valuable insights often come from watching another rider work through a challenge you've experienced yourself.

Who Is This Program For?

The Ride in Balance program is designed for riders who are ready to become more intentional about their development.

You may be:

  • Returning to riding after a break
  • Building confidence
  • Looking to improve your position
  • Preparing for competition
  • Seeking greater harmony with your horse
  • Feeling stuck in your progress

You do not need to be an advanced rider.

You simply need to be curious, committed, and willing to learn.

Led by Laura Kelland May

Participants will be guided by Laura Kelland May, an accomplished coach, senior judge, and educator with a passion for rider biomechanics and helping riders better understand the connection between their bodies and their horses.

Laura's thoughtful coaching style makes her uniquely suited to lead a program focused on rider awareness, confidence, and long-term development.

The Goal Isn't Perfection

The goal isn't a perfect position.

The goal isn't a higher test score.

The goal isn't even a better horse.

The goal is a better understanding of yourself as a rider.

Because when riders become more balanced, aware, confident, and effective, everything else tends to improve as well.

That's the transformation we're looking for.
